DRATABU sons and Olympic Games gold medallists Samisoni Viriviri and Kitione Taliga were hoisted on to a bamboo raft and carried to the community hall where the villagers gathered to give thanks to the players for their feat.

The Taukei Navo, Ratu Meli Saukuru expressed how grateful he was for the two players for staying true to the bargain they committed to prior to their departure.

Ratu Meli had told both players when they each presented their itatau that they were to return with gold and nothing less and directed that a celebration be held on their behalf to show their appreciation.

"We thank you for what you have achieved but I must stress that you must continue to put the Lord first in all things that you do particularly in your rugby career," he said.

Speedster Viriviri said he was grateful to the villagers for their support and for the feast hosted in their honour.

"It's amazing to see what they have done for both of us and I would just like to thank all of them for this,"he said.

Having been out of the country during the birth of her daughter, Viriviri said in a sense his return home was a little more special.

"When she was born, I made a promise to myself that I would bring back something for her and I did. This gold is for my princess," he said.

Taliga expressed the same sentiments saying he was speechless with the whole celebrations.

"I am just so grateful for the people of Dratabu and the extent they have gone to make this possible," he said.
