THE Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) will visit prison inmates and conduct independent investigations into alleged human rights violations.

In a statement, FHRADC director Ashwin Raj said their visit was in accordance with provisions provided by section 20 (2) of the Prisons and Corrections Act 2006.

The Act states, "for the purpose of undertaking any investigation or inquiry in accordance with the Human Rights Commission Act" and the Fiji Corrections Service Commissioners Order No. 005 part 1.2 (e) also provides that the officers in charge must facilitate visits to prisons by the "Officers of the Human Rights Commission".

"The commission is in receipt of complaints from inmates about alleged human rights violations at various detention centres and the FHRADC will visit these corrections facilities this week to independently investigate these allegations," Mr Raj said.

The allegations made included inmates being forced to live and sleep in overcrowded cells for the duration of their stay.

Attempts to obtain comments from the Fiji Corrections Service on the matter proved unsuccessful.
