BAF boosts ginger industry

FIJI'S ginger industry is expected to get a timely boost from the cooperation between the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) and Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

The authority said the two organisations were working to improve and enhance the $12 million fresh ginger export pathway to Australia to ensure that the Fijian fresh ginger exported to Australia was pest free. The Australian Authorities identified quarantine pests of concern including the Yam Yam Scale (Aspidiellla hartii) and burrowing nematode (Radhophilis similis) which needs to be managed.

Last week, a team of scientists from Queensland Department of Agriculture, an independent Government agent assisting BAF team and BAF scientific team conducted experiments on the Fijian Fresh Ginger for Yam Scale (Aspidiellla hartii) and burrowing nematode (Radhophilis similis).

The team conducted a survey to check the disease/pest status of Fijian ginger farms and commercial ginger producing areas.
