THE Sangam College of Nursing will extend its services to Viti Levu this year.

A press release from the college said the school would open in Lautoka and Suva offering courses that would benefit nurses.

"The college has taken yet another giant leap forward with the decision to open the Western Centre at the Lovu Sangam College in Lautoka," the release said.

"The college will embark on the teaching of Bachelor of Nursing (bridging course) at the centre for upgrading the educational qualification of the nurses based at the Lautoka Hospital and neighbouring health facilities.

"Another new centre will be opened in Suva in early September 2016 for the benefit of the nurses engaged at Colonial War Memorial and surrounding health facilities."

The Bachelor of Nursing (bridging course) was endorsed by the Fiji Nursing Council at its meeting in January this year and later approved by the Fiji Higher Education Commission.

The statement said the college had already received 85 applications from practising nurses who had shown interest in upgrading their nursing knowledge.

"The course presentation is blended between face-to-face lectures and online discussion forum with the use of Moodle," it added.

"It is working out very effectively and smoothly for the participants obtaining higher education while in full-time employment.

"There is a positive feedback both from the participants as well as their supervisors about the renewed enthusiasm and eagerness among the staff to apply the knowledge they are gaining.

"It is our hope that the program will synergise the participants to develop a team to take the nursing care to a new level."

Formal registration will take place from August 4 to 6.

Classes will begin after the official opening of the centre by the director of Nursing, Ms Silina Waqa-Ledua on August 12.
