Pacific utility providers discuss desalination, solar projects

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Update: 12:00PM REPRESENTATIVES from the Energy Ministry and Water Authority of Fiji are among Pacific utility providers attending a workshop in Lautoka.

The Pacific Environment Community Fund coordinators meeting is a three-day event where discussions are held on the progress of water desalination and solar projects implemented via $66 million funding by the Japanese Government.

The projects were coordinated with the assistance of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

One of the participants from Vanuatu, Christopher Simelum, said his country had benefitted immensely from the program through the installation of three desalination plants.

"The destruction brought by Cyclone Pam had seriously damaged our water sources and Infrastructure and the recent dry weather brought on by the El Nino has dried up water sources. This project is really helping the people of Vanuatu," he said.
