MORE than 80 of the University of the South Pacific's hospitality students were part of a careers fair yesterday, that included interviews with 20 tourism properties, who were looking for prospective future employees.

The day-long event at Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa featured representatives from major hotel chains such as the Tanoa Group, InterContinental Fiji, Radisson Blu and Mercure.

According to the head of the USP's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, professor Marcus Stephenson, this was the ninth careers fair for the school.

"We first started this initiative in 2006 and this is very special within the school because we put a lot of emphasis on the importance of securing good employment," he said.

"One of our missions is to have a very close association with the tourism and the hospitality industry through lots of different initiatives and this is one of the main ones that helps support students hopefully find suitable employment in the future."

He said the number of tourist operators who showed interest in the fair had increased significantly from last year, where students met with only 14 hoteliers.

"We're getting more involvement from our tourism industry partners every year."

Among the students present were those in their final year at the school, such as Jurgen Traill, who has worked as an intern for Shangri-La's Fijian Resort and Spa for one year.

"The careers fair is the perfect platform for resorts and hotels to meet the future leaders of the Pacific tourism industry," he said.

"It is, however, a nervous yet exciting event for us and we all hope to impress."
