Solar panels light up villages

SOLAR panels are a common feature in villages in the northern Yasawa islands.

At Teci and Dalomo, located on Yasawa Island, more than 30 houses are installed with the sun energy system.

Teci Village headman Ame Tuidama said the villagers worked at a nearby resort to raise money for the panels.

"We were paid to cut trees for a renovation at Bukama Resort and for each bure that was repaired we were paid $1600," he said.

"From that we were able to install panels for 19 homes in the village."

Mr Tuidama said the panels have made life easier.

"We are able to keep a fridge and have lights in every home.

"The village has changed a lot over the past five years and we have seen a big difference in the standard of living in the village."
