Atasa Moceituba

GOVERNMENT member Alexander O'Connor has assured the country that Government is committed to supporting and promoting democratic programs throughout the country.

He made the statement in Parliament yesterday.

Responding to a statement made by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau during the opening of the 2015-2016 Parliament sessions, Mr O'Connor said Government aimed to promote democracy as a means to achieve security, stability and prosperity for all Fijians.

Mr O'Connor said they would oppose any attempts to restrict the rights of others or hold power through coercion.

He said Government also sought to identify and denounce regimes that denied Fijians the right to choose their leaders in elections that were free, fair and transparent. "The Government enshrined the Bill of Rights in our Constitution, an unprecedented legal document that protects and guarantees the rights of all Fijians," he said.
