FRA races against time to fix damaged roads

THE Fiji Roads Authority is working as fast as it can to fix the roads before the next wet season.

Adam Jackson, the maintenance manager of the authority's engineering consultant, MWH Global, said water topped the list of causes of damage to roads.

"On sealed roads, the seal becomes brittle over time and loses its waterproofing properties," Mr Jackson said.

"Once roads that are not sealed lose their shape and start retaining water, they become much harder to maintain."

According to the authority, maintenance contractors have resealed about 80km of sealed roads, rehabilitated about 12km of sealed roads and upgraded about 100km of gravel roads.
