Determination gives Rewa victory

THE determination of the players to keep fighting until the final whistle gave Rewa the victory in the opening Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants semi-final, says coach Marika Rodu.

Rewa defeated Suva 2-1 in extra time play to march into the final which will be played at 3pm at the ANZ Stadium today.

Rodu said the win was an emotional one for the team which had a number of young players.

He said the plan was to avoid the penalty kicks and score the winner in extra time.

"I must thank the Lord first for the strength he gave to the players," an emotional Rodu said after the match.

"Its been an exciting semi-final as expected but we had the X-factor that saw us through in the last minute.

"We were more willing to fight to score that winning goal. We didn't want to go to the penalty kicks so the boys made sure that we capitalise on every ball we had while on attack."

Rodu said they capitalised on the loopholes in the Suva formation.

He said the plan was to shut Suva skipper Pita Rabo in the midfield area which they managed to do later in the second spell.

Veteran Rabo was instrumental for Suva and had been brilliant in setting up quality balls for his strikers.

Rodu also heaped praise for the youngsters in the team adding it was a huge achievement for them to feature in the final.
