Climate change impact

Ana Madigibuli
Wednesday, August 27, 2014

WATCHING helplessly as their village slowly slipped away because of climate change was an experience that villagers of Vunidogoloa in Vanualevu would not wish upon any other village.

Losing their traditional village setting and being forced to leave behind resources that were once valuable to them made villagers realise the importance of creating awareness on the effects of climate change.

Vunidogoloa Village headman Sailosi Ramatu said his visit to Kiuva Village in Tailevu made him realise most villages in Fiji were vulnerable and would face relocation if nothing was done now.

Mr Ramatu said villagers revisited the old village site to ponder on what they could have done to avoid relocation.

Kiuva Development Committee leader Waisiki Tabua said villagers were losing crops because of climate change.

Mr Tabua said being vulnerable to the effects of climate change was something that villagers had to live with but promoting climate change adaptation and raising the level of knowledge and understanding of communities was important.
