THE notices of poll and of pre-poll voting were issued yesterday morning by the Electoral Commission.
The notice stated the times for polling and venues of polling stations on election day and for pre-poll voting.
Chairman Chen Bunn Young said the Fijian Elections Office staff worked hard to compile the list of polling stations and venues. "This a huge exercise, as you may appreciate, that requires complete accuracy.
"The Electoral Commission received the list yesterday and scrutinised it, and made some additional corrections," said Mr Young.
"The final list for polling and pre-polling stations has been published in the Fiji Gazette. This actually occurred late into the night. It was early morning when it was finally done.
"The intention is that full polling venues and stations will be publicised in the media in the coming days.
"Although we are legally bound to do it only once, we have decided to do it several times because we think that this information is very important and the public should be aware of it."
According to Section 35 of the Electoral Decree, the Commission must publish a notice of poll containing the name, residential address, occupation and voter number of each candidate for the 2014 general election with the location of polling stations and venues established for the purpose of voting on September 17and the times between which votes will be taken.
According to the notice, polling will take place on September 17, between the hours of 7.30am to 6.00pm or any other time specified by the Fijian Elections Office.
In the notice of pre-poll voting, the commission published the venues at which pre-poll votes will be taken and the dates and hours at which the Fijian Elections Office will attend at those venues for the conduct of pre-poll voting.
Sections 35 and 82 of the Electoral Decree say that the commission has to give notice of poll and of pre-poll voting within seven days from close of nominations. Nominations closed on August 18 at 12pm.
