63-year-old man jailed for rape

Update: 11:55AM A 63-year-old man found guilty of raping an eight-year old relative in 2012 was sentenced to 14 years, two months and ten days imprisonment by the High Court in Lautoka.

The man was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault for the offences committed in Vatukoula.

 He had pleaded not guilty to the charges but assessors unanimously found him guilty after a four-day trial.

 At his sentencing, Judge Sudharshana De Silva also issued a permanent domestic violence restraining order to protect the victim.

 He said the victim's life had been traumatized and she had been made sexually active at a young age.

 He will not be eligible for parole until he serves 12 years.
