NGO's plans for schools

A NON-GOVERNMENT organisation in the Western Division is focused on helping remote highland communities establish secondary schools.

Rise Above the Reef has been assisting communities of the Yakete region of Ba for more than a year in community development programs with the ultimate focus on education.

Executive director Janet Lotawa said while some communities had early learning centres and primary schools, the next step was to establish a high school.

"Our goal is to eventually establish secondary schools in these remote areas but to have them be relevant to their environment so they are environmentally, conservation and culturally focused," she said.

"So that when these students graduate, they know what to do with their land and their resources rather than feel like they have to go to town to look for work and earn about $2 an hour."
