THE Nadroga soccer team put on a gallant performance as they upset Suva 2-1 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka during the Fiji Sun /Skipper Tuna National Football League round robin competition yesterday.
Jaraed Voi scored Nadroga's first goal in the 36th minute and an own goal from Suva's Kolinio Sivuki in the 86th minute rattled the Capital City boys.
But they regrouped and Ravinesh Singh slotted in Suva's lone goal in the 90th minute after a well timed cross from Pita Rabo.
Suva tried their best to equalise but the home team defended courageously and never allowed the experienced Suva side to dictate play.
Nadroga which had the services of former Ba rep Leone Vurukania, John Rounds, Tom Tuicakau, Krishneel Dutt and Luke Rawadamu looked fitter and well co-ordinated as they took every opportunity available to attack Suva's goalmouth.
Sensing defeat, Suva's Abdul Mushein and Noa Vukica tried to dribble past the Nadroga players but a rock solid defence from the home team denied Suva any chance to equalise.
An elated Nadroga coach Joseph Nand said they needed to win to secure them in the Super Premier.
'We were in danger of the promotion relegation so we did the hard yards by training well this week,' he said.
He added his gameplan was to play it wide because Suva had experienced players in midfield.
"Our boys did just that as they moved the ball out wide as we knew Suva would be dangerous in midfield,'
Suva coach Gujreet Singh said they had opportunities but his players never took their chance.
'It was a good game from both teams but Nadroga is always tough on their home ground.
