Gravel extraction concerns villagers

By LUKE RAWALAI
Sunday, August 10, 2014

Update: 3:17PM VILLAGERS of Banikea and Kavula in Lekutu, Bua claim that the gravel extraction being carried out in their river has robbed them off their major food source.

In an interview, the Tui Kavula Laisenia Masicola said what was once a very vibrant waterway supplying villagers with their diet of prawns, eels and freshwater fish is now no more.

Mr Masicola said much of the Kavula river has dried up.

He said because of heavy extraction works, the river was always muddy.

Questions sent to the Department of Environment last Friday has remained unanswered.
