Daughter inspires mother to plant

TREES and plants are important to people for many reasons.

For Greta O'Connor, she cannot go through a day without expressing her appreciation of Mother Nature.

Mrs O'Connor resides in Nadera and says she grew to love planting flowers and fruit trees when she used to see her daughter, who was five years old then, running around the compound with the neighbour's children and planting.

"I always see my daughter plant flowers when she was only five years old and when the plants grew big, I started admiring them and decided to plant flowers myself.

"Now I am following her footsteps," she said.

Mrs O'Connor said when she woke up every morning after completing her house chores, she would water her flowers, remove unwanted grass and planted more seedlings.

"Sometimes as soon as I am in my garden, I forget about lunch and dinner and that is how much I love flowers and plants."

She said she initially began planting to beautify her surroundings but people visiting her home started buying the plants, which she sold at different prices depending on the type of plant.

At times, she said she would get invitations to the horticulture exhibitions usually held at the sea wall in Suva.

Some of the plants she grows are guava trees, kumquat, coconut tree, passion fruit, strawberry and other plants, which, according to her, are for domestic use.
