Teams battle for two remaining spots

THE four teams that will make the 2014 Skipper Cup semi-finals will be confirmed after this weekend's round of matches.

Defending champions Nadroga has secured a home semi-final spot after taking out the top spot in the points table with one round to play

Second-placed Naitasiri with 38 points is also guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

The remaining two spots will be up for grabs on Saturday as the four chasing teams, all in contention for the semi-finals will give their last try.

The Iliesa Tanivula-coached Nadi side is third on the table with 34 points and faces neighbour Lautoka in what is expected to be a thriller at Lautoka's Churchill Park.

The Jetsetters know that only a win will see them in semi-finals.

Hosts Lautoka will be playing for pride in front of its home fans after a poor run this season.

The Maroons sit at the bottom of the Skipper Cup points table with seven points, from 2 wins out of 10 games.

Fourth-placed Suva with 32 points also has a chance but will need to beat Vatukoula when they battle at Albert Park in Suva.

A draw or a loss for the Capital City side will surely see them drop out of the race.

The other two teams with a slight chance of making the last four are Northland and Namosi.

Northland with 31 points faces Nadroga at Gatward Park in Tailevu.

The Watisoni Ratulevu-coached side will need a miracle to upset Nadroga and their semi-final hopes also rests on Vatukoula beating Suva.

Sixth-placed Namosi on 29 points has a very slight chance of making the semis.

The Timoci Wainiqolo-coached side plays Ovalau at Nasau Park in Levuka and will be hoping for a bonus point victory and that both Suva and Northland lose their matches.

Fiji Rugby Union media officer Talei Mow said this week's matches would be the last round of competition before the semi-finals.

Mow said the teams to play in the semi-finals would be given a week to rest before the competition resume.

"The first semi-final will be played after the rest week before the second game will be played the following weekend," Mow said.

The Skipper Cup draws for Saturday: Lautoka- Nadi, Northland- Nadroga, Tavua-Macuata, Ovalau-Namosi, Naitasiri-Tailevu, Suva- Vatukouka.
