CHRIS Daniel has formed a Suva Marathon Club which would host its first event on October 4.

It would be the first marathon in the Capital City in over a decade and he said interest had already started pouring in.

Daniel said more than 70 people had put their hand up for participation in just the first week of the announcement.

"There are three things we are targeting — one is to promote Suva, the other is to push more locals to take up long-distance running and the third is to encourage people to exercise more regularly and contribute in a small way to efforts to counteract the growth in NCDs in Fiji," he said.

"Also, taking part in a marathon, half-marathon or team marathon is a great way to raise money for charity and raise-awareness of important causes."

Daniel is an avid runner from the United Kingdom and said he couldn't find any such competition in the country so the best thing was the create one.

"I've been living here for 18 months and I looked for a marathon I can do in Suva but I couldn't find one so I thought might as well organise one."

"We are going to have a full marathon which is 26.2 miles, a half marathon and team which requires a team of four and each person runs 10.5KM."
