Nadi athletics club wants regional event

THE Jet Runners Club of Nadi is urging Athletics Fiji to bid for hosting rights for any upcoming regional athletics competitions.

Club president Abhinesh Kumar said the best one to start with would be the 2016 Oceania Athletics Championships.

He said losing the hosting rights for the Oceania Cross Country Race that was to be held later this year in Denarau had a big blow to Fiji as a whole.

Kumar said the country needed an international or regional event in its own back yard to boost the growth of athletics.

"The cross country race would have benefitted the athletes, the economy, tourism and the country as whole," he said.

"But since we have lost the hosting rights, we need to bid for other events so that we gain from it and I think Athletics Fiji should bid for the 2016 Oceania Championships."

Kumar said the event would be a major revelation to the sport and the country if it were to be hosted here.

"We have the resources, the facilities and the manpower to host the event but it's up to Athletics Fiji to decide.

"I am sure the athletes would benefit a lot from the event and I know the athletes in the West are hungry for international competition but not everyone can go overseas to compete so why not bring the event here."
