A FIRE left a house in Nausori in shambles on Thursday afternoon.

It is understood the house had been vacant for some time, making the fire a mystery to many.

It took joint efforts from two fire stations to put out the fire.

National Fire Authority CEO John O'Connor said they received an emergency call at four minutes past 2pm from the driver of a passing vehicle who said a garage was on fire.

"When we got there, it ended up being a four-bedroom, wooden-gated house," Mr O'Connor said.

Witnesses Mana Savaki and Jais Patel said they did not know how the fire could have happened.

"I heard the crackling sounds from the windows, and then went outside and saw the smoke," Mr Savaki said.

NFA is investigating.
