Resort boosts league

RUGBY union's loss is rugby league's gain as Outrigger on the Lagoon resort has stepped in to assist in the development of rugby league in Nadroga.

The resort has been a major sponsor for the champion Nadroga team over the past years helping the side to win the coveted Farebrother Sullivan Trophy and the then Digicel Cup.

Now the focus has shifted to rugby league.

Resort general manager Peter Hopgood said the objective of the sponsorship was to develop the sport and to unearth untapped talent in Nadroga.

"Over the years now Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji has been a major sponsor of Nadroga rugby," he said.

"A decision has recently been taken by the resort management team to also develop rugby league in this 'sports mad' province.

"It is time for the resort to get behind establishing a quality rugby league team in the province.

"Last year the Fiji Bati took the time to come and visit the staff and guests at the resort and this was a wonderful occasion for everybody involved where we made a commitment that we would support establishing a quality competition in Nadroga.

"In a couple of years we will be able to establish a championship team in the premier competition in Fiji."

The resort gave $10,000 for the purchase of all Nadroga rugby league team jerseys.

"The resort provided the local rugby league competition with a cheque for $10,000 which will be used to provide all of the teams with rugby league jerseys," said Mr Hopgood.
