MISSION Babasiga took out the main cup during the Sabeto Valley Horse Races at the Aviva race course in Wailoko, Nadi on Saturday.
The horse from Nabitu up the Valley Road in Sigatoka, lived up to expectation in the mile and quarter feature race.
Being the early favourite Mission Babasiga was handed the last flag behind the pack but caught with the other challengers by the first end of the first round around the track.
From then on it was a challenge between Mission Babasiga ridden by Masuk Ali and Pepsi ridden by Riaz.
At the end Mission Babasiga edged Pepsi by a horse length.
A total of five horses competed in the event dubbed as the longest race in the country.
Mission Babasiga owner Ashik Ali said they brought the horse to Sigatoka from Vanua Levu three years ago.
Ali said this was their first major win.
"Mission Babasiga has won many small races but this is the big one," he said.
"I feel very proud to win a major race. There was a lot of hard work put in to get the horse into top shape.
"Jockey Masuk was brilliant guiding the horse after being placed at the back of the field from the start."
Race organiser Livai Tora was happy with the turnout.
Tora said they had learnt a lot by organising their biggest ever event.
"It was a challenging day with all the logistics to transport the horses to Sabeto," he said.
"We have had a lot of feedback from the stake holders. The tourism industry is keen to get on board. We hope to hold another race in August with better organisation."
