THE visiting Mont Dore Basketball Club from New Caledonia played its opening match against the Yat Sen Secondary School team at Ed's Court in Raiwaqa yesterday afternoon.

This is part of their two-year tour where the club organises a sport journey for the young players.

The 27 member delegation of Mont Dore Basketball Club consists of 11 boys, 10 girls and a managerial team of five officials.

The players are between the ages of 14 and 17 and some of them, in particular the girls, are in the New Caledonia pre-selection team who are currently preparing for the FIBA Oceania U19 Oceania Championship which will be held in Fiji in November and December 2014.

The team is coached by Félix Kilikili, who is also the New Caledonia women's head coach for the 2015 Pacific Games.

Basketball Fiji has welcomed the team adding it supported the tour as it was a chance for the local players to expose themselves to international level basketball,

Meanwhile, Basketball Fiji is running a development program "Hoops for Health" under an initiative called Pacific Sports Partnership (PSP).

The aim of "Hoops for Health" is to improve health related behaviours and contribute to a reduction in the risk of non-communicable diseases through physical activity.

It will also target areas such as improved governance, improve and create development partners and capacity building.

The one-week workshop is designed to inform and enlighten development coaches about the importance of highlighting and reducing the impact of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) in Fiji through basketball and sport.
