Touch of magic

WASN'T that lovely?

What a strike! What a goal! Watch out for him. Lionel Messi is off to a bright start and there is more to come from the Argentine maestro in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

He tried hard, made several attempts at goal after forcing that own goal from Sead Kolašinac in the 3rd minute to go 1-0 up against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Messi failed at every attempt until that strike in the 65th minute. His superb one-two with replacement Gonzalo Higuain and that sublime finish. This World Cup just keeps getting better.

The Maracana stadium erupted. Messi seemed to have found the rhythm he was missing and looks to finish on a high this time around.

The 26-year-old regarded the best footballer in the world has won everything except for the World Cup title. Messi played in two World Cups (2006 and 2010) and until yesterday, he had only a goal under his name.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is making its debut in the World Cup, scored it's first-ever goal through Vedad Ibiševi and will surely cherish this moment for generations to come.

In numbers, Messi and the Co took 11 shots to 16, five of which were on target while Bosnia and Herzegovina hit 11 shots on goal.

Argentina dominated the possession at 55 per cent and made 10 saves while the newcomers made four saves and managed six corner kicks.

Argentina played the 3-5-2 formation which didn't really work to their advantage while Bosnia and Herzegovina's 4-2-3-1 had everything lacked confidence.

Not a bad debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina for standing shoulder to shoulder with one of the tournament favourites.

In other matches, Karim Benzema fired France to a 3-0 win over Honduras while Switzerland defeated Ecuador 2-1.

Maybe you have noticed this. Different coloured boots, really?

Players are wearing different coloured boots on each foot, one pink and one blue.

The tradition of wearing unmatched shoes started in 2008 when singer Joss Stone paired a pink high heel with a turquoise one.

People asked her if she got dressed in dark.

It was just the start of a "fun trend" which has now entered the football pitch. Wonder what next?

Fixtures (today) - 4am Germany-Portugal, 7am Iran-Nigeria, 10am Ghana-USA
