Blood need

ABOUT 50 blood donors are needed every day to keep blood banks in Fiji completely filled up.

And this is the reason why giving blood is important, says Fiji Red Cross Society youth co-ordinator Sevuloni Ratu.

He said to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation, an oratory contest was organised by its Ba branch yesterday.

"We ran an oratory competition for secondary schools and poster competition for primary schools on the topic 'Safe Blood for saving mothers', which is the theme for this year's World Blood Donor Day on June 14," he said.

"The schools participating are Ba Sanatan College, Nukuloa College, AD Patel College, DAV College, Ba Sangam College and Xavier College."

Mr Ratu said they were keen on raising awareness among young people about the importance of safe blood donation.

"These two competitions are the start of a bigger program.

"We are working with the Fiji National Blood Service to reintroduce Club 25 into schools in Fiji.

"Club 25 is a youth driven global program, where young blood donors take a leadership role in promoting healthy lifestyles and donating blood regularly.

"The name Club 25 is based on the original idea of young people pledging to donate 25 times by the age of 25 years.

"It is really about choosing a healthy lifestyle and donating blood regularly."
