A small price to pay for a healthy life

JONATHAN Daniel Smith misses playing in the rain with his friends.

Since he was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease in 2011, he has only watched his friends play in the rain from afar.

The 15-year-old did not know he had RHD until a school visit from the Fiji RHD group.

He was in class six then at Marist Convent and ever since, his life hasn't been the same.

"I was frightened when they told me I had RHD," he said.

"I thought I was going to get an operation or worse, die."

Now Jonathan lives a very careful life.

While he still plays sports with his friends, this is restricted to as little contact as possible.

He also has to make sure he stays clean and in a clean environment or risk another attack and worsen his condition.
