Call to change system

SOME districts reps in the Ba Province want the lease payment system reverted to the method used prior to 2011.

When the issue was discussed during the two-day Ba Provincial Council meeting in Viseisei, Vuda, the reps said heads of landowning units should be entitled to a larger portion of the payment.

The amendment of the lease payments came into force in January, 2011.

The changes resulted in the equal distribution of lease monies between all members of a mataqali or landowning unit.

Council chairman Ratu Tevita Momoedonu said TLTB North West manager had assured that a team would visit the concerned districts.

He said the council also agreed to discuss the issue further with concerned landowners and the relevant authorities.

Roko tui Ba Josefa Toganivalu said while the issue was discussed extensively during the two-day meet, it would have to be discussed further with each landowning unit within the province.

"That issue has been raised but we will have to engage each landowning unit to discuss the matter with them before we take it to the relevant authorities," he said.

Meanwhile, the meeting was hailed a success by the first-time chairman.

"To me personally, as the chairman of the Ba Provincial Council and this being my first time to chair the council meeting, I am very satisfied with the presentations done and the response from district reps," he said.
