IT was a 12-year jail term for a 65-year-old man who raped his four-year-old granddaughter two years ago.

The man was found guilty after a trial and convicted accordingly.

According to the facts of the case, the elderly man raped his granddaughter on June 18, 2012 while she was asleep.

Justice Janaka Bandara in his sentencing said the medical examination showed the girl was injured.

He said the State prosecution had failed to hand in sentencing submissions which resulted in the court not being provided a victim impact assessment.

The man has served a month in remand, therefore he will serve 11 years and 11 months with a non-parole period of eight years.
