Champions drop two key players

Spain's provisional 30-man squad for the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil was named by manager Vicente del Bosque.

The manager omitted Alvaro Arbeloa and Isco, while giving a chance to Daniel Carvajal and Ander Iturraspe for their first caps for Spain.

Alvaro Arbeloa's omission is a huge surprise as the versatile defender was part of the Spain sides that have won back-to-back European Championships and the World Cup in the last six years. Arbeloa's club-mate Carvajal has earned a spot due to his fine form and will definitely be first choice for the right-back position.

Highly-rated Real Madrid playmaker Isco is among those who have missed out, as well as Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado, who has had a poor campaign in the English Premier League for Tottenham. Fernando Torres has earned himself a place for the striker's role.

The defending champions have included seven players from Barcelona and four each from Champions League finalists Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Del Bosque will announce his final 23-man squad on May 25.

Spain have a tough group in Brazil, with Netherlands, the team they beat in the final four years ago, Chile and Australia alongside them in Group D.

Spain:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli/ITA), David de Gea (Manchester United/ENG)

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos (both Real Madrid), Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba (both Barcelona), Cesar Azplicueta (Chelsea/ENG), Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich/GER), Raul Albiol (Napoli/ITA), Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas (all Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Ander Iturraspe (Athletic Bilbao), David Silva (Manchester City/ENG), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal/ENG), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Tiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich/GER), Juan Mata (Manchester United/ENG)

Forwards: Diego Costa, David Villa (both Atletico Madrid), Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas (both Manchester City), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Juventus/ITA), Fernando Torres (Chelsea/ENG)
