Family unit focus

Torika Tokalau
Thursday, May 15, 2014

THE family structure in Fiji is changing.

Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni said unlike the past when there were only children, parents and grandparents in a unit, today there were more grandparents and great grandparents.

She said in this instance, and as Fiji commemorates International Day of the Families with the rest of the world today, more emphasis should be given to the care of the elderly.

"What will be affected is the care of the aged members of the family because most young people do not have the experience so this would affect the health of a family unit," Dr Luveni said.

"There is a lot more responsibility on the shoulders of our young people."

She said more young people who were employed and especially those in the maritime areas, moved away from their homes because they did not know how to care for the older citizens.

She said women too, who were found to survive longer than men, had a lot more workload in terms of care for the elderly.

Dr Luveni said this year's theme families matter for the achievement of development goals was a challenge to all families.
