New party leader

FELIX Anthony is the new leader of the People's Democratic Party.

Mr Anthony was nominated at the party's AGM at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka yesterday which hosted more than 2000 party supporters from around the country to the one-day meet.

New leader and former unionist Felix Anthony said the election itself carried the mandate of the people.

"One of these things we are proud of at the PDP is the membership — members decide the leadership of the party," Mr Anthony said.

"There is going to be accountability to the members of the party as I intend to regularly consult them about leadership within the party.

"One of the main areas the party is doing is to change the phase of politics in this country — politicians need to be accountable to the people and not the other way round."

The former unionist said while they were yet to decide on their election line-up, every party member or candidate would be required to work very closely with the people.

Mr Anthony believed the stepping down of former interim president Adi Sivia Qoro would not take away the important role she played in the party.

"She is very much an integral part of the party, I just had a word with her and she has agreed to meet next week to discuss a number of issues we have been working together with.

"There is absolutely no problem at all as far as I am concerned and as Adi Sivia is concerned.

Mr Anthony added they would also consult people in different parts of the country before deciding on their election party line- up.
