Maloney lifts his game

SYDNEY - NSW Origin five-eighth James Maloney concedes criticism of his early season form was on the mark.

Maloney copped much of the blame for the Sydney Roosters' slow start to their NRL premiership defence, with NSW coach Laurie Daley challenging him to lift his game in order to retain his Blues No.6 jersey.

The premiership-winning playmaker did just that on Saturday night as he and NSW halves partner Mitchell Pearce were instrumental in the Roosters' 24-18 win over Cronulla, their first victory in a month.

Maloney, who scored a try and kicked four from four, said his own effort was an improvement on recent weeks.
