FIJIANA coach Iliesa Tanivula has mapped out an 18-week off-season program for the players after naming 40 players in an extended squad after the Nawaka 7s tournament last week.

The former national men's 7s coach said after the return of the Telecom-sponsored side from the IRB Womens Sevens World Series China 7s, he saw some areas that needed off-season work.

He said the performance of the girls at the Nawaka 7s was impressive and so more girls were added to the training squad.

"At the Nawaka 7s, the skills, interest and energy was all there," Tanivula said.

"Also coming back from China, we saw that they needed some work on strength and conditioning.

"So we have set up an 18-week off-season program which the girls have never experienced."

He said the 18 weeks would be broken down into three stages.

"Three blocks of six weeks each and the first phase will be about bulking them up a bit, so we will work on strength.

"Second phase will be on strength and endurance to balance it out and the third phase will be the pre-season preparation for our competitions later in the year."

The Fijiana is slated to participate at the Canada International 7s event which will be held on September 13 and 14.
