Man on trial for rape

Shalveen Chand
Wednesday, April 16, 2014

THE trial of a man who allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl on Kadavu last year continues in the High Court in Suva.

The man was a music teacher when he allegedly committed the offence.

He was charged with one count of rape, one of indecent assault and another of sexual assault.

He has pleaded guilty to the two latter charges, however, he denies raping the girl.

Yesterday the State produced the girl in court who gave sworn evidence.

The court, however, ordered that the evidence by the girl could not be reported.

The defence counsel had told the court the confession in the caution interview was being challenged.

Justice Salesi Temo allowed for the voir dire to take place after the complainant had given her evidence. The prosecution produced four witnesses on Monday and three yesterday.

The defence hopes to start its case later today.
