Pride of his parents

BA lad Ravinesh Chand dedicated his gold medal to his parents after the medals and prizes ceremony at the University of the South Pacific on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old was awarded the gold medal and vice-chancellor's prizes with the best combined academic performance and all-round service to the community and gold medal for the most outstanding graduate with a major in Education.

Chand graduated yesterday with a Bachelor of Science and Graduate Certificate in Education Maths and Physics.

He said the achievement was the result of years of struggle his parents had gone through to provide everything for his educational needs.

"My father was a cane farmer for 15 years and for the past five years he has been working at a sawmill," the former Ba Sanatan College student said.

"He and my mother provided me with whatever I needed so I could progress, and now their struggles have paid off."
