NFP government will review education laws

REVIEWING education laws is a priority for the National Federation Party if it wins the election.

But party leader Professor Biman Prasad said NFP would keep the Toppers Scheme for 600 high achievers in Year 13 introduced by the Bainimarama government.

"However, for those who do not make the cut in the 600, we will introduce a means tested scholarship," Prof Prasad said.

He said this ensured students from very poor families would get full scholarships and not be forced to take a loan.

"We will also convert all loans in 2014 to means tested scholarships for those who meet the criteria."

Prof Prasad said NFP would also review teachers' salaries so it commensurate with the work teachers, specialists and school heads undertook.

He said the party was also focused on creating jobs.

"Thousands of graduates, schoolleavers and skilled people cannot find jobs.

"This is because there has been no growth in the manufacturing and agriculture sector.

"It breaks the hearts of parents who borrow to support higher education of their children when they see them out of work on completion of their studies."

Prof Prasad said this pain was played out in so many families every day.

He said if it was voted into government, the NFP would work with employers and investors to create decent employment opportunities through a range of job incentives.

"We will in particular pay attention to supporting both the manufacturing and agricultural sector as both have significant potential for employment creation."

He said the party would work with Australia and New Zealand to have Fiji join the Pacific Labour Scheme.
