Update: 3:47PM THE High Court in Suva convicted former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry some three hours after assessors returned with a unanimous guilty opinion.

Justice Paul Madigan said the offence under the Exchange Control Act was one of strict liability and the offence was proved after facts were admitted in court.

He said Chaudhry was a resident of Fiji, he had monies in foreign currency abroad and that they were with an unauthorised dealer.

Chaudhry was granted bail until sentence is given. Mitigation and sentence submission will take place on May 1.
