Luke Rawalai
Thursday, April 03, 2014

THE government has been saving $1.2million annually since dissolving the Fiji Sugar Commission and the Sugar Marketing Division (SMD) in March 2009.

At the meeting of the Committee for Better Utilisation of Land meeting in Labasa on Tuesday, Ministry of Sugar director Viliame Gucake said the termination of the Sugarcane Growers Council in September 2009 saved government another $250,000 in director fees and meeting expenses.

Mr Gucake said the fees generally paid for the council's meetings pertaining to the affairs of cane growers.
