Baravilala gets seat on FASANOC executive board

FORMER Fiji Rugby Union CEO Manasa Baravilala was elected a new member of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) executive board during its AGM on Wednesday.

FASANOC president Reg Sanday said Baravilala was nominated by Boxing Fiji.

He said veteran sports administrator and Fiji Swimming life member Harvey Probert and Karate Fiji president Makarita Lenoa retained their positions on the board.

"Radhika Prasad from Lawn Bowls missed out on re-election while a nominee from Athletics Fiji, Filimoni Vuli Waqa, withdrew his nomination on personal grounds," Sanday said.

"The meeting voted former FASANOC president Vidhya Lakhan as life member for his 38 years' service to FASANOC."

He said FASANOC's revised strategic plan for the period 2014-2016 was discussed and approved.

"Our new vision is 'to inspire the people of Fiji through sporting excellence'; the new mission is 'to put Fiji on the world stage in sport by achieving excellence in sporting performance while promoting Olympic values'.

"The targets endorsed are to improve our overall ranking in regional competitions by 2016 (Pacific Games from fifth in Noumea 2011 to third in Port Moresby 2015); achieve more top three placing's in Oceania events; one gold medal in Rio 2016 Olympics, and two gold medals in 2022 Tokyo.

Sanday said the meeting also endorsed FASANOC's new strategies to diversify its revenue base, including moving more into the area of promotion and sponsorship, and also to do more in encouraging sport and fitness to improve people's well-being and health.
