New reps in squad

HIGH school students Kelera Nawai and Vilisi Tavui have been named in the 24-member Fiji Pearls netball side.

Nawai, Tavui and seven other players impressed during the national trials at the Vodafone Arena over the weekend.

Sixteen-year-old Nawai is a student of Jasper Williams High School. Nawai is one of the shooters while Tavui, who attends Lelean Memorial School, has made her mark as a future defender.

"Kelera was identified by Lautoka netball officials who pushed her to play for their district side, and she performed at the national championship," said Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau in a statement.

"Vilisi has been on our radar for some time. Her talent was identified early in 2013, and she was sent to a development camp in New Zealand in December.

"The work she has put into training has resulted in her being selected for the national squad."

Making a comeback after a break of two years from national duties is Teimumu Moce, who was part of the Fiji side to the World Championships in Singapore in 2011.

The selectors were impressed with the turnout and the competition.

They also selected an extended squad of 21 potential players, one of whom is Manisah Shyal, a Fijian of Indian descent from Navosa.

"Manisah has been identified for further development by the national selectors," said Bogidrau.

The Pearl Squad will meet at the National Netball Centre on Thursday March 27, while the meeting with the extended squad will be announced later.
