THE activities around the setting up of a multi-million dollar tourism project in Nadi are affecting a small community at Namulomulo in Nadi.
The excavation activities in the Nasau area, off Mulomulo Rd, which involves the carting of soil for a landfill for the Fantasy Island resort project, has damaged a water main and the roads and increased the dust menace in the area.
Residents have taken the matter up with the authorities as they now have to repair the pipe themselves.
Lyn Scott said the past 10 months had been very stressful for residents of the area.
Canefarmer Madhu Sudhan, who has lived there since 1963, has to park his car at a neighbour's place and walk to his home because the road leading to his home has been taken out.
Meigunyeh Rd resident Mohammed Kalil, who lives about 3km from the excavation site, said trucks begin running from 6am until 8pm and the dust was unbearable.
Mr Sudhan said they repaired the pipe on Saturday morning, but by the evening another truck had run over it cutting off supply to their area again.
"The last time the Water Authority came was last year, and they stopped because the trucks kept damaging the pipes.
"I have taken this up with the authorities, from the Prime Minister's office to the Commissioner Western — all we ask is that they go about their business but do not disrupt our lives."
Officials in the PM's office said they would look into the matter and contact the Water Authority of Fiji.
Fantasy Company Fiji Limited managing director Abbas Ali said the issue should be the business of the contractors, the Water Authority of Fiji and the Fiji Roads Authority.
