Netball to pick top 24

NETBALL Fiji hopes to select the best team for the new busy season.

Yesterday, 78 players from six affiliated associations turned up for the national trials at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Fiji Netball Association vice-president Vivian Koster said they were pleased with the response from the Nasinu, Nadi, Lautoka, Navosa and Suva associations.

She said they had a couple of Test matches lined up starting in May and running through to November.

"The purpose of this trial is to prepare for the upcoming Test matches," Koster said.

"We will name 24 players and also a feeder squad for the national side. We will release the names to everyone soon."

Koster said the main focus would be the Pacific Netball Series in Cook Islands in June and that it would serve as the World Cup qualifiers.

"We will have the May series where we will play against Northern Ireland, PNG and two or three other nations. This will be held here at the Vodafone Arena.

"But the most important one is the PNS in Cook Islands. It will serve as the World Cup qualifier where only two teams from the competition will qualify, so it is very important to us.

"We also have Test matches later on in September and November."

Koster said national coach Unaisi Rokoura would name her final team prior to the May series.

Seasoned players such as Maria Lutua, Taraima Mitchel, Nina Cirikisuva, Afa Rusivakula, Taufa Taga, Lusi Robanakadavu and Matila Waqanidrola featured in yesterday's trials.
