GOSFORD, NSW - A gutsy, injury-hit Manly have bounced back from their worst ever Brookvale capitulation with a 14-12 win over South Sydney in Gosford on Friday.

Six days after they surrendered their biggest ever lead at their spiritual home to Melbourne, Manly showed they will again be a force in 2014 with the narrow win over round one's most impressive side.

A 76th Jamie Lyon penalty goal was the difference between the two sides after David Tyrrell was pinned for slowing the play the ball from about 30m out adjacent to the posts.

Souths had jumped ahead 12-6 after 55 minutes before 15,120 fans.
