+++Roberts sacked

SYDNEY - The career of Penrith utility back James Roberts is in doubt after the Panthers sacked him on Friday.

Roberts, 20, was thrown a career lifeline by the Panthers after he was axed by South Sydney for repeated off-field indiscretions in 2012.

The Panthers in a statement said they had terminated the NRL flyer's contract.

Tax fraud

BERLIN - Bayern Munich host Bayer Leverkusen in yesterday's top Bundesliga match with the European champions reeling from Uli Hoeness' resignation after his conviction for major tax fraud.

Sami Hyypia-coached Leverkusen were the last team to beat runaway leaders Bayern in the league when they left the Allianz Arena with a shock 2-1 win in October 2012.

Akmal cleared

LAHORE, Pakistan - Pakistani cricketer Umar Akmal was yeterday cleared in a traffic violation case after the police officer forgave him, saying he was a "national hero".

The 23-year-old was arrested by Lahore police on February 1 for violating traffic rules and scuffling with policeman Mohammad Zeeshan.

Soccer ban

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A sports tribunal has ordered a football club in southern Brazil to play five matches away from its stadium because its fans racially abused a referee during a match.

The tribunal also fined Esportivo about $13,000 after some of its supporters allegedly called the referee a "monkey" and told him to "return to the jungle" in a match on March 5.

Two months out

MADRID - Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa will be sidelined for nearly two months by a knee injury, jeopardising the Spain international's participation at the World Cup.

Arbeloa said his right knee is worse than he thought "but if everything goes well, I'll be out from six-to-eight weeks."

Sagan victory

ROME - Slovakian cyclist Peter Sagan produced a late burst of power to claim victory in the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, with Michal Kwiatkowski taking the overall lead from Mark Cavenish yesterday.

Sagan, of the Cannondale team, finished several bike lengths ahead of Kwiatkowski and Australian Simon Clarke on a slightly uphill finish in Arezzo.

Collapsed lung

NAPLES, Italy - Italy and Napoli fullback Christian Maggio has been hospitalised with a collapsed lung after getting hit in the chest earlier this week in training.

Napoli says Maggio was taken to a medical facility near its training centre after the squad returned from Portugal early yesterday morning following a 1-0 loss to Porto in the Europa League.

Aquero injured

LONDON - Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed Manchester City will be without Sergio Aguero at Hull on Saturday after the Argentina striker suffered a hamstring injury against Barcelona in midweek.

Aguero, who has scored 26 times this season, was forced off at half-time in the Nou Camp on Wednesday as City slumped to a 2-1 defeat that confirmed their exit from the Champions League.
