Cakau back

FORMER national captain Setefano Cakau has forced his way back into the national sevens team.

The 35-year-old was named in the 12-member Vodafone Fiji team for the Tokyo and Hong Kong leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series by coach Ben Ryan yesterday.

Also making a return to the international scene are Jasa Veremalua, Waisea Nacuqu and Apisai Domolailai.

The only debutant in the side is the lad from Muaira, Naviti in Yasawa, Vatemo Ravouvou.

Dropped from the side are Samu Saqiwa, Jona Tuitoga and Semi Kunatani while those who failed to make the cut were Joeli Lutumailagi, Setefano Rasekaia and Jerry Tuwai.

Ryan said he had a sleepless night last week trying to decide who to pick and who to drop.

But he said he had faith in the team that he had chosen to deliver the goods on the field and put Fiji back on track for a top three finish in the series.

The Englishman has faith Cakau, Veremalua and Ravouvou to blend well in the team and provide the winning combination they need.

"I have been an admirer of Sete for a long time now and he has experience and leadership. He is a hard man who knows the game well and it doesn't matter how old he is because he is still capable of performing at that level.

"Jasa has been knocking on the selection door for some time now and he is a good aerial forward with the ability to offload and run in support play.

"And Vatemo is probably the best passer, the best kicker and he is a very good all-rounder with good footwork and I am sure he will blend in very well."

Ryan has Tokyo to focus on before Hong Kong and he is asking the players to do the same.

"They know they have to perform and not relax and wait for Hong Kong because they must perform in Tokyo first to get them into the contention for Hong Kong."

Fiji 7s team: Apisai Domolailai, Jasa Veremalua, Pio Tuwai, Setefano Cakau, Benito Masilevu, Emosi Mulevoro, Waisea Nacuqu, Vatemo Ravouvou, Donasio Ratubuli, Osea Kolinisau, Samisoni Viriviri, Leo Naikasau.

Head Coach - Ben Ryan; Team Manager - Ropate Kauvesi; Team Physiotherapist - Jennifer Khalik.
