ANTHONY John was crowned winner of the Nadi Foodhall Supermarket-sponsored Summer Cup round one at the Lautoka Golf Links over the weekend.

John withstood a tough challenge from last week's pre-Summer Cup champion Charlie Bhaskaran with a score of 34 to Baskaran's 35.

The 63-year-old golfer said the competition was tough but he was happy to beat young golfers.

"The win has given me the confidence to win the main title at the completion of the series in round five," said John.

"I am proud with my achievement, especially beating golfers younger than me.

"The competition was tough but it made me play smartly and win the first round."

John said he was optimistic of continuing his fine form in this weekend.

Former Lautoka open champion Prem Chand finished third on 37 while veteran golfer Gaffar Ali followed on 39.
