* It commemorates the 40 days during which Jesus spent fasting in the desert where he endured temptation

* During Lent, many of the faithful give up certain types of luxuries such as yaqona, alcohol or meat

* Its purpose is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial
