Tough trek uphill for first timer

THE logistics behind organising a trek to the Base Camp of Mount Everest can be a nightmare to overcome — even more so for a first-timer.

But Fiji boy Ritesh Kumar, who arrived at Base Camp after a 14-day trek, said proper planning and having a worthy guide could surmount any problem faced.

In an email correspondence from the Base Camp of Mount Everest yesterday, Mr Kumar said he settled on a guide company after much thought and research.

"I chose a trekking company in Kathmandu after doing some online research and my wife Reni was very supportive because it really is a once in a life time opportunity, especially when you may not have the time," Mr Kumar said.

He said the trek involved flying to Nepal and preparing for the trek from there.

"To do these treks, you will have to fly into Kathmandu and there are numerous trekking companies who can help co-ordinate everything. They will fly you to Lukla, to the Hilary-Tenzing Airport, where you will commence your Everest Base Camp adventure for around 12-15 days in total."
