Ryan wants more players

Rodney Duthie In Wellington
Sunday, February 09, 2014

BEN Ryan will travel the islands of Fiji to give every aspiring rugby player a chance to make the national team.

Ryan returns home after the Wellington 7s tournament and heads straight to Nacula in Ba to begin his search. He said he would have other people on the lookout for talent at tournaments where he was not available

"I'll be in Nacula when we get back and we have the Marist 7s as well. I'll also make arrangements for my visit to Vanua Levu to watch some of the boys.

"I've got guys watching tournaments in Ba and various parts of the country and I am always driving to get better players.

"We'll be naming a training squad and we'll be looking to have a training camp in Rakiraki. We are trying to go out to the different parts of the islands to have camps and meet all the people that are passionate about the game."

He said he would include several players from last year's national under-18 side which beat New Zealand.

"I can't be everywhere so there are some good people helping me and I'm hoping we can use them to scout for players.

"It doesn't mean we have a bad side, we have a good team here and we have other boys we're looking to bring into the squad. We also have some under-18 boys that beat the New Zealand Secondary Schools that I'm looking to bring them into the team."
